Boy who stood in front of Peter Obi’s campaign convoy in viral photo languishes in Kirikiri prison |Omohglobalnews

A young boy who went viral for halting the convoy of the former Labour Party’s standard bearer, Peter Obi, during the 2023 general elections has been languishing in the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for alleged stealing and fighting in Lagos State.

According to reports, the boy was returning from work when he was apprehended by a group of individuals in his neighborhood and taken to the police station.

An X user @Hausa_girl, Nurudeen Hassana, who tweeted about the boy’s ordeal, said she accompanied the boy’s mother to his last hearing in court on March 27, 2025, adding that the case was adjourned till April 28.

She also explained that the court was waiting for advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions, adding that the boy had been suffering from the entitlement people had when he was gifted money during the last election.

“Do you guys remember this picture? Well, the boy in front of this convoy is languishing in Kirikiri prison. So Jonathan told us about the young boy. I’ve spoken with his mother, and we also went to his last court hearing at Orege Court, Ajegunle, on March 27, which was adjourned till the 28th of this month.

“I don’t chase clout with people’s lives!! Case file is currently at DPP. The court is awaiting advice from DPP on how to proceed with the case. He’s suffering from the entitlement people had when he was gifted money during the last election. The boy is innocent… he’s just a victim!

“He was coming back from work the day some guys in the street apprehended him and took him to the police station. The guys told the police that he’s among the people stealing and fighting in the area, which is not true. He’s being charged with stealing and fighting,” Hassana tweeted.

However, in an updated post on Tuesday, Hassana noted that right activist Inibehe Effiong had intervened in the case, adding that plans were on to visit the boy in the correctional facility on Thursday to get further briefing from him.

“Good morning, all. So we’re talking to @InibeheEffiong about this case, and we’ll be seeing him on Thursday alongside the boy’s mother and then proceed to the correctional centre where he’s been held to get the full brief from the boy. I’ll keep updating you all,” the tweet read.

Meanwhile, Nigerian human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has called for the immediate rescue of the boy, citing his apparent innocence.

In a post on his X handle on Tuesday, Sowore said if anyone had access to his lawyers or family, they should kindly notify him at your earliest convenience.

“Given the boy’s apparent innocence, immediate rescue efforts are necessary to remove him from prison; if anyone has access to his lawyers and family, kindly notify us at your earliest convenience.”
