BREAKING: 10 Dead, 8 Injured in Abuja Stampede During Church Palliative Distribution |Omohglobalnews


Atleast 10 people have been confirmed dead and 8 others injured in stampede during the distribution of food items to vulnerable and elderly individuals at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja.

The tragic incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2024.

According to reports there are four children among the 10 people who lost their lives in the incident while 4 out of 8 victims that sustained injuries have been discharged.

It was learnt that the event had drawn mostly residents of Mpape, Gishiri Village, and other nearby settlements in the Federal Capital Territory.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh confirmed the incident expressing sympathy with the families of the deceased and wishing a swift recovery to the injured.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the police emphasized the need for organizers of public events, charitable activities, or large gatherings to notify the Police in advance. This measure is aimed at preventing similar unfortunate incidents in the future.

“This will allow the deployment of adequate security measures to ensure public safety and prevent avoidable tragedies.

“Failure to comply with this directive will result in the organizers being held liable for any incident or loss of life resulting from their negligence. 

“The FCT Police Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property in the Territory. Members of the public are encouraged to collaborate with the Police by adhering to these guidelines and promptly reporting emergencies through the FCT Control Room via 0803 200 3913 or 0806 032 1234”.

This is coming after the Ibadan Children Christmas Funfair incident that occurred on Wednesday which led to the deaths of 35 children according to the Oyo State Police Command.

The police said six others were injured in the stampede.

The police said eight persons were arrested over the tragic incident, one of whom was a former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Olori Naomi Silekunola.

The Silekunola was one of the organisers of the event.
