In a concerted effort to reduce the prevalence of malaria and enhance disease control, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Health Authority, in compliance with the Ogun State government and in partnership with the Society for Family Health (SFH) and the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), has commenced the distribution of 412,150 Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs) across the Council area.
The initiative was officially launched by the Chairman of Ado Odo Ota Local Government, Alhaji Lawal Adewale Wasiu FCA, represented by his Vice Chairman, Hon. Abosede Balogun, in a flag-off ceremony held at the Local Government secretariat Hall in Ota.
The Council boss emphasized that the distribution will prioritize rural dwellers, who are at higher risk of contracting malaria. He charged critical stakeholders to ensure that targeted people who are vulnerable to malaria for the success of the program. In his words
"There is empirical evidence of the high effectiveness of ITNs in malaria control. We believe that if we can achieve our objective by ensuring that, for every two persons, there is one bed net to sleep, the burden of malaria would drop significantly,".
The distribution of insecticide-treated nets will take place from November 19th to 23rd, 2024, between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM at all designated distribution points.
The Health Secretary, Dr Bakare Jeleel, called on journalists and media practitioners to help create awareness for the campaign, describing the media as a strategic partner in boosting demand generation for the distribution. He urged all stakeholders to work together towards elevating Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, stressing the importance of collective effort in addressing the needs of the masses.
The Health Educator, Mr Bankole Augustus, announced that all 16 wards of the Council area would benefit from the exercise with specifically designated centres for the distribution of ITNs to ensure the effectiveness of the program.
One of the participants, Mr Alagbe Goriola, commended the effort as a significant and positive development. He emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences and addressing any gaps or shortcomings to ensure the initiative yields maximum benefits for communities, particularly children.
