The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye has apologised for saying any believer who does not pay tithes will not make heaven.
In 2018, the cleric speaking at one of the monthly Holy Ghost Service at the Redemption Camp, along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, claimed that paying tithe was one of the prerequisites for going to heaven
He said those who still have doubts about tithes should heed his statement.
-
He advised pastors of the church in attendance to warn their parishioners about the danger of ignoring thithing.
“I want to give every one of you pastors an opportunity to repent tonight.
“And then to go back, immediately after this convention, to restitute your ways with your congregation. Make it clear to them…Anyone who is not paying his tithe is not going to heaven, full stop”, he said.
The pastor’s stance generated huge criticism reactions from Nigerians. One of the numerous critics was from controversial on-air-personality, OAP, Daddy Freeze who invited him for a debate to teach him the scriptures and ‘real truth of Christ’
-
He said; “And they say pastors don’t hold guns to member’s head, please can someone explain what is RCCG doing in this picture?
“Tithe is a false doctrine for Christianity, I have proven this scripturally several times! Christ never collected tithes, neither did his disciples!
“I have challenged Enoch, to a debate on several times to no avail. If he doesn’t want a debate, we can sit over a beer and discuss these scriptures and I can offer to teach him the real truth about Christ for free!”
However, Adeboye has apologised for the comment while addressing his congregation recently in a video making the rounds on the internet.
Describing his earlier claim as a “mistake”, Adeboye said the bible never said such.
He emphasised that the bible says peaceful and holy living are the prerequisites for making heaven.
-
“I apologize for saying ‘If you don’t pay tithe, you might not make it to heaven.’ I’m sorry, that’s wrong, and it’s not in the Bible. What the Bible says is ‘Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see God’,” he said.
