A 22-year-old man, Bakare Ayobami, has been arrested for allegedly buying a car with a fake bank alert in Ondo State.
The Ondo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Akure, the state capital.
She said that on Oct. 26, 2023, a case of cybercrime was reported to the police, involving the suspect who hails from Ode Irele in the Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State.
According to Omisanya, Ayobami had on Oct. 20, 2023, at about 18: 00hrs, went to a car stand belonging to Mr Filani Oluwaseun and Mr Ogbaguwa Oluwasola at Ikare Road, Owo, to buy a Toyota Corolla 2006 model in the sum of N4,650,000.00 using fake bank alert.
She noted that, through intelligence gathering, police operatives attached to the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad, arrested Ayobami Bakare and his accomplice, Abdullahi Abubakar, aged 26, in Ekiti.
“The stolen vehicle was recovered in Osogbo, Osun State, while another Toyota Camry 2014 model valued at N6.2 million suspected to have been stolen, was also recovered from the suspect,” the statement read.
“Other items recovered include one iPhone 12 PRO Max valued at N600,000.00k and one iPhone 14 PRO, all purchased with fake transfer,” she said.
Mrs Omisanya said the Suspect has confessed to the crime, adding that he would be charged to court after the police investigation on the matter is concluded.
In a related development, a 29-year-old cleaner, Rakiya Garba, was on Thursday arraigned before a Kaduna Chief Magistrate’s Court for stealing N780,000 belonging to her employer, Hajiya Aisha Sadiq.
The defendant, who resides in Malali, Kaduna, was charged with breach of trust and stealing.
She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Jan. 27 at Ungwan Sarki in Kaduna State.
Leo said that the defendant, who is a cleaner for the complainant, went into her bedroom and stole the sum of N780,000 meant for the complainant’s children’s tuition fees.
He said that during police investigation, the defendant confessed to the crime and the sum of N380,000 was recovered from her.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, one of who must be a blood relation.
Emmanuel said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years tax payment to Kaduna State Government.
He adjourned the case until March 7, for hearing.
