2023:CApIC ACE Marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Day... Disease Common Among Men |Omohglobalnews

Head of the Covenant  Applied Informatics and Communication, Africa Centre of Excellence ( CAplc-ACE) Professor Emeka Iweala, has disclosed that prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancers among men.

He made this disclosure during a programme entitled " Prostrate Cancer Awareness 2023" held at Ado Odo Ota Local government Secretariat Ota, last Tuesday. 

Prof Iweala said the awareness is brought to Ota communities in order to reduce the burden on the society, adding that the disease is common among men of 40 years and above. He told  his audience that knowledge and early detection are keys to live a prostate cancer free.

Dr Chidiebere ƒgo, In his own contribution, he said one out of six men in Nigeria has prostate cancer, adding that men should be extra careful because at 40 years, the disease is hardly being  detected or controlled as it occurs when certain genes in the prostate develops mutations that cause them to grow out of control and later forms a tumour. 

Dr ƒgo, listed some risk factors for prostate cancer which include;age, hereditary, race or ethnicity, hormones level, diet especially red meat, diary food, low in calcium and low fruit intakes together with obesity which has high risk.

He gave the symptoms of the disease as frequent urinating, difficult starting or stopping urination, painful ejaculations, blood in urine or siemen among others. 

Dr Ogo advised men to visit the nearest hospital to consult the consultant and to avoid self medication and herbal treatment.

CU-CDIIC Chairman, Professor Tayo George has remarked that covenant university (CU) is lending its support towards the rapid development and progress of Ota community and its environs. 

She said further that major functions of any university is to teach, and impart knowledge, carry out research as being done by CU-CAplACE, while the third one is community development, partnered together with the research team to create awareness on prostate cancer to Ota community.

Prof. George gave highlights of some of the initiatives programs of CU to Ota community which include, borehole for Ota market, transformers to various communities, renovation of Iju health centre - 4months ago, 30kva generator for Obasanjo police station, hilux vehicles for Sango police station and Nigeria Navy Ota, free medical services, eye glasses to both old and young during any health programs, gifts, donation to orphanage homes and empowerment of 130 Ota youths among others.

In conclusion, special thanks was accorded the Chancellor of CU, Dr David Oyedepo, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo, Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sheriff Musa for his support always and all other stakeholders.
