Protests Erupt In Kaduna After Muslim Man Allegedly Slaughters Dog For Consumption |Omohglobalnews

An incident in the Nasarawa community of Kaduna State, where a Muslim man allegedly slaughtered a dog and shared its meat with fellow sect members, has led to protests and reactions from Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, the Supreme Council for Shariah in Kaduna, and the State Police Command.

The incident occurred on Tuesday and triggered an uproar among Muslim believers in the area, resulting in protests by local youths. They attempted to confront the man at his residence and Islamic school, expressing disappointment with his actions, which they believed contradicted Islamic teachings.

Ismail Abubakar Rijana, speaking on behalf of the sect, argued that eating dog meat was not prohibited by the Quran, emphasizing their right to practice their belief based on their understanding of the Quran.

However, the Kaduna State chapter of the Supreme Council for Shariah condemned the sect’s actions, asserting that dogs are considered forbidden as meat in Islam, according to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.

The council clarified that Islamic Law relies on the Quran, the Prophet’s traditions (Sunnah), and consensus among scholars (Ijma’). It emphasized that true Muslims must adhere to these foundational principles of jurisprudence. The council referred to specific Quranic verses and hadiths that prohibit consuming certain animals.

In response to the controversy, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi explained that Muslims are only permitted to eat four animals for religious rites: camel, cattle, sheep, or goat. He mentioned that any other animal, including dogs, is forbidden for religious sacrifices or consumption within the Muslim community.

Sheikh Gumi emphasized the importance of peaceful dialogue and urged the protesting youths to avoid violence and vigilantism. He also highlighted the significant role of hadiths in Islamic law.

The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the situation and initiated an investigation. The accused individual denied slaughtering the dog for a naming ceremony. The police cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands and assured them of a thorough background check on the sect members involved.
