Tinubu’s Govt Increases NYSC Corps Members’ Allowance |Omohglobalnews

The Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an upward review of feeding allowance for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.

The Kaduna State Coordinator of the NYSC made this known while fielding questions from journalists, shortly after the opening/swearing-in ceremony for the 2023 batch B stream 2 orientation course did not specifically disclose which of the corps member’s allowances was reviewed.

When asked what plans were made for the corps members in terms of welfare while in the orientation camp and beyond, he said “first, the federal government in its wisdom has reviewed the feeding allowance of the corps members.”

The coordinator who promised to prioritize corps members’ welfare in his state said, “I told them (corps members) I’m going to make their food of good quality and quantity.

“I told them I will ensure that they won’t spend their money in the camp market. This is the promise I made to them and I’m fulfilling them.

“I’m going to feed them in such a way that they will not spend from their pocket. They don’t even have the money, so it is our duty to ensure we feed them well.

On arrangements by the state government and private organizations to ensure timely payment of stipends of corps members posted to them for Primary Assigment, he said, “In line with our operations of the monthly stipend we pay corp members, we expect their employers, be it state goverment, private organization we post corps members to pay them some little stipend in addition to what Federal Goverment sends them. This employers should be able to fulfill that.”

Meanwhile, a corps member in Oyo state has allegedly been decamped by the NYSC authority after posting a tweet criticising one of its hostels and advocating for the abolition of the scheme.

In the tweet, the young man identified as Anthony compared his dormitory, Ajimobi Hostel, to a Nigerian prison and called for the immediate scrapping of NYSC.

“Kirikiri >>> Ajimobi hostel. So I’ll be here for three weeks. Scrap NYSC now,” he tweeted.

The tweet quickly went viral and caught the attention of the NYSC officials, who reportedly traced it back to the corps member.

A video that he posted via his Twitter account showed the state of one of the hostels where corps members slept.

A Twitter user with the handle @Mayowa_Sam claimed that the corps member was sent away from the camp as a punishment.

She said: “Be careful of what you tweet, this guy was decamped this morning because of his tweet. Yeah, we want Elon Musk money, but then that doesn’t mean we should tweet things that would get us in trouble.”

@corpersdiary_ng reacting said; “Dear corps members, please note that you’re currently in a regimented scheme where you are guided by laws and rules. In so much as you’re passionate about effecting a change in your world, please be guided with the way you post things.

“The issue of scrapping NYSC is a done deal! It can’t be scrapped just take your mind off it. It is attached to our constitution and it’s on the same eve as our national anthem and pledge. If there are things you find offensive and you can’t post, pls send to us via DM or other leading social media pages. Stories like this hurt us so much. Guys pls be guided.”
