The immediate past Chairman of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata has joined the Labour Party at his ward in Edo state.
Akpata confirmed this in a post made on his official Facebook page on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.
According to him, he officially obtained the Labour Party membership form in March 2023, but attended his first party meeting on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at Oredo Ward 6, in Benin City, the state capital.
Giving reasons for joining politics, the former NBA president said he was tired of lamenting about Nigeria everyday and bemoaning her fate, adding that the new journey is for him to proffer solutions to the problems facing Nigeria.
He said; “Quite a number of people have called/messaged me to confirm the news, currently making the rounds, that I have joined a political party. Yes…I joined the @labourparty_ng in March this year and on Sunday I attended my first Ward Meeting at Oredo Ward 6, in Benin City, where I was formally introduced to members of the Ward and presented with my Party membership card.
“This was a major step for me and not one that I took lightly…but I simply got tired of complaining about Nigeria every day and bemoaning her fate and I decided to take the plunge and to try to be part of the solution rather than agonising continually over the problem. This, for me, is the start of a very important journey and it is my prayer that I arrive safely at my destination.”
Meanwhile, it was said that Akpata might be obtaining form in the party to contest for the state’s governorship election which will be held in 2024.
The Labour Party in Edo state is yet to produce a gubernatorial candidate and has said the ticket is open for any person who feels he/she will be able to bring victory for the party.
Edo is currently being governed by Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who won re-election for a second term in September 2020.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not fixed the date for the governorship election in the state.
