President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has opened up on why he suspended the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
Recall that Emefiele was suspended and subsequently detained by the DSS on Saturday, June 10, 2023.
His suspension was widely commended as many believed his policies as the head of Nigeria’s apex bank are no longer functional.
However, Tinubu who has been silent about the suspension spoke during an interactive session with Nigerians resident in France and neighbouring European countries on the sidelines of the New Global Financing Pact Summit in the French capital, Paris.
The President said the nation’s financial system under the suspended Emefiele was rotten.
He said many Nigerians abroad were unable to send money to their relatives because of the multiple exchange rates, saying all that have become a thing of the past.
“Then the financial system was rotten. Few people making bags of our money and then you yourself, you stopped sending money home to our poor parents. Several windows… but that is gone now, is gone.
“The man is in the hands of authorities, something is being done about that, they will sort themselves out.”
Meanwhile, Emefiele has dragged the DSS to court seeking discountenance of his detention.
Emefiele in the suit prayed for the court to enforce his right to liberty and freedom of movement, as there is no basis for his continuous detention.
