The Labour Party presidential candidate in the February 25 election, Peter Obi has received a heavy backlash for saying Nigerian children’s future is uncertain.

Recall that every May 27 is set aside to celebrate children all over the world, and for adults to remember their childhood experiences.

The former Anambra state governor in his Children’s Day message which was contained in a series of tweets via his Twitter handle on Saturday, lamented the increasing number of out-of-school children and infant mortality in Nigeria, saying the future of Nigerian children is under threat due to governance failure at all levels.

“The parameters of national development continue to point towards uncertainty for the future of Nigerian children, owing to the failure of governance at different levels.

“Consequently, we have the highest number of out-of-school children and the highest number of infant mortality,” Obi said.

“Nigerian leaders at all levels of government to consider the future of Nigerian children in all their political decisions.”

“The future of our children must remain a top governance priority to us,” Mr Obi said. “The non-investment in critical areas of development, especially in health and education, impacts directly on the children,” he added.

However, his choice of words in the message’s body has subjected the politicians to heavy criticism.

A Twitter user said; “This man is always cursing his biological children. I wonder who him offend. Tueh!

Another user wrote; “U certainly refer to your kinsmen in Agulu, their wards future is bleak.”

“What future did he give the children in Anambra during and after his governorship? na mumu dey fall for this not me,” another user said.

Meanwhile, some individuals supported Obi’s stance as they urged people not to be sentimental about the point he made.

@theyomiblag wrote; “It can’t be, septugenrians and octogenarians are the leaders of tomorrow in Nigeria. They snatch power, grab it and run away with because it’s not served alarcarte.”
